Phnom Penh & Solidarity :
Two Exhibitions for a Wave of Solidarity

Nearly five months ago, the multidisciplinary artist Khun Vannak (photographer, performer, and painter) was diagnosed with a rare form of skin cancer, which had also developed internally, reaching stage 4 of 4. Following all necessary examinations and inter-departmental meetings, chemotherapy treatment was recommended by the oncology service at Calmette Hospital.

The current plan is to seek confirmation on the relevance of the proposed treatment from another specialized center, a standard practice in many countries, before proceeding. Furthermore, as the effectiveness of the treatment is not entirely guaranteed, preparing a 'Plan B' is necessary. It is also important to note that this cancer is treatable but not curable, meaning follow-up care (every three months, ad vitam) will be required, even if the chemotherapy proves successful.

To support him in the short and long-term battle he is fighting and preparing to face, a powerful wave of solidarity has emerged within the artistic communities, spearheaded by Meta House and quickly followed by the Romcheik 5 Gallery.

As a result, in under two months, two exceptional group exhibitions have been organized, featuring no fewer than 34 artists from diverse backgrounds, all of whom have donated one or more of their creations. Paintings, photographs, and sculptures on various media will be put up for auction. In total, a staggering 69 works of art will be offered!

The Meta House: Fundraising Art Auction: It’s time to save Vannak’s Life
Tuesday, November 25 to November 30, 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM (Free Entry)

At this exceptional evening event, you will have...Read More

COLLIDE- Bold Colours. Zero Boundaries.

COLLIDE
Bold Colours. Zero Boundaries.
Opening | Nov 19, 2025 | 6PM | STAIRWELL GALLERY

COLLIDE brings together three artists: Ket Monnyreak, Alex Maul, and Bruce McLean — whose practices stretch, bend, and joyfully blur the lines between art, design, typography, and lived experience.

All three artists share a fearless spirit. Their works are bold and playful. They each carve out their own creative language and when placed together, those languages collide in an uplifting way. Typography and colour plays a central role in this exhibition.
A century ago, Picasso began weaving type and printed fragments into his Cubist works, opening the door to a new relationship between text and image. Today, artists around the world continue that exploration — and here in Cambodia, the conversation evolves in its own distinct way.

While Khmer visual culture has long included script — from temple inscriptions to hand-painted signage — the use of text as a contemporary artistic device is still relatively sparse. This makes Ket Monnyreak’s practice particularly exciting. His bold Khmer fonts, graphic forms, and playful visual language feel both fresh and rooted, carrying the rhythm of Phnom Penh in a way that’s immediate, joyful, and uniquely his. Placed alongside Alex Maul’s atmospheric mixed-media pieces and Bruce McLean’s witty, boundary-pushing prints, these works create a conversation that moves easily between cultures, generations, and disciplines.

Whilst curating this exhibition what struck me most was the energy that happens when these works share a space.
They speak across borders.
They make us smile.
They bring us together.

COLLIDE celebrates that moment — when art crosses into design, when text becomes texture, when colour becomes...Read More

Since its founding in 2008 by the French Cultural Center—now the Institut français du Cambodge—the festival has remained one of Southeast Asia’s most influential cultural events, dedicated to exchange, discovery, and dialogue between Europe and Asia. This year, the festival continues to support both emerging talents and renowned international artists, offering the public a unique journey through images, stories, and perspectives.

The 2025 edition brings together historical archives and contemporary creations, presenting a compelling visual narrative that spans more than half a century. One of the highlights is the exhibition of Micheline DULLIN, who documented Phnom Penh in the 1960s as the official photographer of King Norodom Sihanouk. Her rare aerial images capture key architectural landmarks such as the Olympic Stadium and the White Building—structures that have since vanished but continue to live on through her photographs.

The festival also commemorates a painful chapter in Cambodian history: the rise of the Khmer Rouge. His latest exhibition, Nature of Women, currently on display at Meta House, explores the emotional and symbolic layers of femininity.

Each drawing begins with a feeling. Using real models and props, Billy constructs scenes that move between dream and reality. His women appear both delicate and powerful, revealing emotion through subtle gestures and details. The softness of pastel and colored pencils gives his work an intimate quality, inviting viewers to look closer and connect with the emotion behind each portrait.

Billy is a self-taught artist who began drawing during high school, taking commissions to develop his craft. Since 2018, he has focused on pencil art, refining his ability to mix realism with imaginative, surreal elements. His subjects often include women and animals, especially cats, representing emotion, vulnerability, and curiosity.

Snapping 2025 / Snap Dance
A multi-screen video installation by Michael Laub

Snapping 2025 / Snap Dance is the latest multi-screen video installation by acclaimed artist Michael Laub. The video portrait series features an intriguingly diverse array of individuals, and Snap Dance captures performers of dance ranging from ballet to hip-hop. The dancers move without music, the viewer hears only their footsteps, their breathing, the rustling of their costumes, and, of course, the snapping of their fingers.

Laub first produced a Snapping installation from 1981 to 1983 in Antwerp, Stockholm, and Bangkok and presented it there and in other locations. In 2021, while writing a book, he looked into his archives and found a trailer from that original installation, although he had lost the original footage. He grew curious to see if it could still be relevant today. This year, he decided to expand the concept by introducing a strong dance component.

Since 2011, Laub has gained renown for his production of The Portrait Series, which adapts classical portraiture to the stage. For more than two decades, he has employed live arts and video to capture wide socio-cultural, geographical, and professional cross-sections of society, exhibiting in various locations and cultural institutions across Europe and Asia.

Join us on Wednesday, November 12 at 6pm for the inauguration! The installation is in 3 parts, first the exhibition gallery, then Le Bistrot, and finally in the cinema.
After the inauguration, the installation is accessible...Read More
