The Japan Foundation (JF) is thrilled to announce a special initiative, “Japan’s Local Wonders in Films”, available for free on the online platform JFF Theater from May 1 to August 1, 2025. This exciting three-month event invites global audiences to explore the charm of Japan’s diverse regions through six captivating films and eight cultural videos—all with multilingual subtitles.
The six featured films showcase the unique beauty and traditions of Japan's local landscapes:
- Aomori: "Ito" (2021) - A heartwarming story of a high school girl excelling in Tsugaru Shamisen.

- Okinawa: "Nabbie's Love" (1999) - A beloved classic that highlights Ryukyuan music and Okinawan culture.
In addition to the films, eight special videos produced by JF provide a deeper understanding of Japan’s cultural heritage, from traditional arts and music to festivals and museums.
During the screening period, the event will also feature online talk sessions with Kaori Ishii, the director of “The Genealogy of Sake” and “A Handful of Salt”.
