Netratuoh (Sightlines) Exhibition — Prum Ero’s Dialogue Between Nature and Architecture
Organized by SNA Arts Management, Netratuoh (Sightlines) is the second solo exhibition of Cambodian artist Prum Ero. Blending photography, experimental sound, and archival projections, the exhibition explores the intricate relationship between humans and nature, reflecting on the tensions and possibilities between environmental conservation and social development.
Land and Solitary Houses: Pteah Cham Dei
The first gallery presents “Pteah Cham Dei” (begun in 2018), featuring solitary houses across plains and highlands displayed on large green billboards. Some appear abandoned, others temporarily inhabited, symbolizing traces of land occupation and the impermanence of settlements.
Ero describes them as “guardians of the land,” signifying ownership yet also fragility. Many collapse within seasons, only to be rebuilt, reflecting both human ambition and the uncertainty of rural habitation.
Underwater Architectures: Sangket Sakor
The second and third galleries feature “Sangket Sakor” (since 2020), where Ero turns underwater to capture coral reefs as natural architectural masterpieces. Their layered structures sustain biodiversity, regulate ecosystems, and support both natural habitats and human life.
A line of light traced across the coral symbolizes fragility and boundary, calling for urgent awareness of marine conservation. Combined with experimental sound and archival projections, the works immerse viewers in both the beauty and vulnerability of natural architectures.
Reflections and Meanings
At the core of Ero’s work lies the question of how humans seek and claim land. He notes that transitions from forests to community-managed land often bring major social and economic consequences, reshaping both the environment and human livelihoods.
Ero’s visual language blends documentary techniques with quiet poetry, avoiding overt messaging while offering viewers space for reflection. His career continues this trajectory, with past projects such as Bring Forest to the City (2017) and Invisible Voices (2020), and presentations at the Angkor Photo Festival and ASEAN-EU Cultural Festival.
