“Ponlork ” Solo Exhibition by Ly Sokvichea
Shophouse Studio Art Gallery at Pteah Chas is proud to present Sprout (ពន្លក) a solo exhibition by Cambodian artist, architect, and digital illustrator Ly Sokvichea (Vichea).
Ponlok — the Khmer word for "sprout" — is both metaphor and guiding principle. Bringing together works made over several years, the exhibition traces an evolving journey rooted in cultural preservation, research, and creative reinterpretation: a slow unfurling of memory, heritage, and imagination.
At the heart of Vichea's practice is a tender commitment to Cambodia's vernacular architectural heritage — the richly diverse structures found within Buddhist temple compounds (wats). Through patient observation and digital illustration, she records buildings and decorative traditions made vulnerable by rapid development, insensitive renovation, neglect, and a changing climate. Her work widens our image of Cambodian heritage beyond ancient stone temples, revealing a living architectural landscape that still shapes who we are.
Running alongside this documentary impulse is a parallel body of work drawn from traditional Khmer painting. Looking to the mural traditions of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries — and to temple paintings made between the 1930s and 1970s — Vichea reimagines inherited visual languages through contemporary digital media. These works don't reproduce the past so much as renew it, opening a dialogue between memory, imagination, and modern life.
Together, documentation and interpretation become two halves of a single, lifelong question. With each illustration, Vichea connects yesterday to tomorrow, conservation to imagination — uncovering fresh insight into heritage while planting seeds for its future. Just as a sprout pushes up through the earth, Ponlok stands for growth, sustainability, and the enduring spirit of Cambodian creativity.
Artist Biography
Ly Sokvichea (b. Siem Reap, Cambodia) is an architect, artist, documentary photographer, and digital illustrator.
Drawn early to architecture and the visual arts by the landscapes, nature, and intertwined cultures she grew up among, she developed a deep fascination with traditional and performing arts — leading her to volunteer with local art associations and cultural festivals from 2016. She works in film photography (portraits and scenery) and digital illustration to explore and document the traditions and society of the Cambodian people, reflecting on the collective memories and ways of life that shape identity.
Vichea is a recipient of the Treeline Artists Grant (2023) and has exhibited in the Treeline Artists Grant Group Exhibition, Treeline Galleries (2023); Threads of Us, SOSORO Museum (2025); the Sa Sa Art Project Fundraising Auction & Exhibition, FT Gallery (2022); and Mix Media May, Shophouse Studio Gallery (2022). She graduated from the Royal University of Fine Arts with a Bachelor of Architecture and Urbanism.
